Two years into retirement, Maigret and his wife are living in a small country house, working in their garden. A wealthy woman tracks down Maigret and insists he investigate the death of her granddaughter. The older woman suspects her son-in-law and Maigret finds himself back in the swing of things as he digs into the woman’s family and their dark secret.
This short novel puts Maigret into a less interesting setting as he hangs around two canal-side mansions and a small, barely-operating inn, digging into a unpleasant family. Still, it is Maigret and Simenon, so it is an interesting examination of these various characters, including Maigret.
