Carter Brown – The Never-Was Girl (1964)

Vintage Silver Age Mystery
Just the Facts Category: How — Death by blunt instrument
Cloak and Dagger Challenge #81
TBR #56
Date Finished: June 13, 2018

A British actor hires Rick Holman to investigate a hazy memory he has of waking up drunk next to a dead girl, who seems to have been beaten to death by a liquor bottle. His friends all claim he was at a party with him during this period, but could they all be lying? Holman gets involved with these various movie people as he investigates.

The Rick Holman series tones down the humor attempts evident in Brown’s other series, primarily the Al Wheeler one, which results in a fairly decent mystery, though the treatment of women comes close to sexual harassment in almost every interaction. A quick read, at least.
