Bill S. Ballinger – Not I, Said the Vixen (1965)

Vintage Silver Age Mystery
Just the Facts Category: Where — Features a courtroom scene
Cloak and Dagger Challenge #84
Date Finished: June 16, 2018

Noted defense attorney, Cyrus March, is called into a case while recovering from a multi-day bender. A minor actress has shot an intruder in her apartment, but the police believe it was a premeditated murder, rather than self defense. March fights his alcoholism, while falling in love with his client, who may not be telling him the entire truth, as the intruder turns out to have been a woman with whom his client may have been having a lesbian affair.

The plot and the characters are interesting enough, but the 1965 attitudes toward homosexuality are difficult to take, especially as March is torn as to whether his lover is “normal” or not. The introduction of the lesbianism theme could have been interesting and groundbreaking, but it is never considered in a positive, or even neutral, manner.
