A cleaning woman, Mrs. McGinty, has been killed and her sad sack lodger convicted and is facing the death penalty. Superintendent Spence is not satisfied with the conviction and calls in Hercule Poirot to investigate before the execution takes place. Poirot soon discovers clues leading to a long-held secret that may be the motive for the murder. As he investigates he gets involved with the various village characters in attempt to find this secret past.

Although Poirot and Ariadne Oliver remain quirky characters, and the others are interesting enough as well, the obviousness of the murderer at the two-thirds mark of the book disappoints. No clever Christie surprise here, as the fake alibi does not slip by unnoticed. Too bad.
