Cloak and Dagger Challenge #7
Date Finished: January 20, 2018

A man is found murdered on a train arriving in Paris. An almost identical man is also checked into a classy Parisian hotel. That man is identified as a criminal conman, Peter the Lett. Maigret follows him around, sits, watches, and eventually travels to a fishing village where a missing man matches the description of one of them, while a man living in a Paris flophouse with a prostitute does as well. Maigret investigates.

The first in the Maigret series, this introduces us to his investigative technique of watching and waiting until the suspect cracks. In the end we end up with three different killers, but the first is the source of it all and the one to which Maigret devotes his efforts. As with most of these, this is a study in characters rather than a standard whodunit or a logic puzzle. The plot is a bit complicated, but a strong beginning for the series.
