The Detection Club was a group of British mystery writers who gathered for social activities also wrote a number of round-robin novellas, two of which are gathered here. The first has six authors in succession writing a couple of chapters each, led off by John Dickson Carr. In the story, a young man is assaulted in a tunnel of horrors ride and his girl disappears. The second novella, featuring five authors, is begun by Dorothy Sayers and is a bit more successful than the first. A widow, somewhat at loose ends, takes a housekeeper/cook position at an isolated home with an unusual family. Anthony Gilbert, in particular, tries to leave the succeeding author with a good cliffhanger. These round-robins are more fun for the authors than the readers, I’d say, but these were short enough to get through with a minimum of pain.
