Follow the Clues step #19: from Cries to Cry

A police lieutenant, Mark Deglin, catches up to a murder suspect in what he thinks is an open-and-shut case and beats him to death. It is quickly proven that the suspect is innocent and Deglin spends the rest of this novel participating in and avoiding the investigation. Of course, being a cop, it is the cover up, not the crime, that is his downfall, as the persistence of a couple of characters keep the investigation after it first appears to be a simple disappearance.

Made into the classic film Where the Sidewalk Ends in 1950, directed by Otto Preminger and starring Dana Andrews, some consider the film superior to the original novel. The novel is very well written, however, and very suspenseful, as you end up rooting both for and against the cop. Tough, tight, gripping.
