Stanley Ellin – The Key to Nicholas Street (1952)

Vintage Golden Age Mystery
Scavenger Hunt Category: Green Object
Date Finished: January 15, 2017
TBR #5
Follow the Clues step #5: from Key to Key.
Reporter Challenge: Set in a state starting with an N (New York).

This is a very interesting look at a family and a murder with each chapter told from a different person’s viewpoint, Rashomon-style. A respected family in small-town society is not all they seem as a sharp fashion designer from New York moves in next door to them on Nicholas Street. A young male friend of hers begins visiting her and becomes involved with the family as well, especially the reserved daughter.

This is much more a character study and a commentary on society than a whodunit, as the mystery is not all that difficult to solve. Perhaps that predictability is a strike against it, but I still found it very enjoyable and engrossing.

We’ll call the key image in the background as the Green Object for the card. For the Find the Clues we’ve moved from the House without a Key to the Key to Nicholas Street.
