Richard S. Prather – Kill the Clown (1962)

Vintage Silver Age Mystery
Scavenger Hunt Category: A Mask
Date Finished: September 4, 2016
TBR #66.5

Shell Scott returns for his 24th (or thereabouts) adventure as Prather has to construct a story somehow to get him into a clown suit. He obviously came up with the title before the story here. There is something about a beautiful client and her “brother” who is going to be executed for a murder he didn’t commit. Shell has to investigate the mob, again, and the best way to do this is to infiltrate the head mobster’s Halloween party dressed as a clown. Logical. Of course, there is a mistaken clown identity and the whole thing goes to hell. I have to remember that these things were meant to be humorous, especially by this point in the series.
