Craig Rice – The Sunday Pigeon Murders (1942)

SundayPigeonMurders

Vintage Golden Age Mystery
Scavenger Hunt Category: Bird
Date Finished: June 22, 2016

The first appearance of Bingo Riggs and Handsome Kusak, as they attempt to make some money on the insurance payout for the long-disappeared Mr. Pigeon. They rediscover him just days before the seven years expire, after which the half-a-million dollar insurance policy is to be paid out to his former partner. They kidnap Mr. Pigeon and find the partner dead, meet other interesting characters, and try to survive on less than $10 per day in New York City. Apparently this was Rice’s first New York novel and she throws in a lot of different items about the city, including the street photographer business. A very enjoyable mystery romp. The third book in the series was completed by Ed McBain after her death in 1957, so unfortunately there is only one more of these to read for me.
