J.M. Flynn – The Hot Chariot (1960)

Vintage Silver Age Mystery
Scavenger Hunt Category: Car/Truck
Date Finished: May 30, 2016

One half of an Ace Double with Kiss the Babe Goodbye by Bob McKnight, this one is a bit longer and features a federal agent, Joe Mannix, investigating the brutal beatings and murders of three soldiers from an army base near the Mexican border. The difficulties with this novel are primarily due to its short length. Mannix quickly tumbles to the motive behind the killings, all related to automobile purchases from a shady dealer, then goes undercover in the army, purchases a car, and heads to Mexico to resell it. The plot gets a bit too convoluted here with the Mexican end of the racket moving around constantly, but instantly found and destroyed by Mannix. Still a quick action mystery that holds the interest. It seems like Flynn was a bit of a drinker, which was fairly obvious, as during almost any break in the action, Mannix is stopping off at a bar for several drinks.
