As opposed to Dr. Thorndyke and his logical world is the hate-filled and twisted world of Inspector Allhoff. Losing his legs in a gun battle, he remains on the police force as a expert reserved for the toughest cases. He has the officer he blames for the loss as his assistant, along with the narrator. These pulp stories are clever mysteries and a clever characterization and situation, different from most other detectives, especially from this era. These pulp stories, all first appearing in Dime Detective Magazine between 1938 and 1941, often had more of a gimmick, which we seem to have returned to with the TV shows of the ’70s and with modern mystery novels.
