Since my copy of this is actually from a Detective Book Club 3-in-1 volume, I’ll select this first edition cover, showing the ghostly figure of the dead twin brother. I read many of these Manning Coles mysteries during a period of poor record keeping, so I was afraid I had already read this one, but it turned out to be completely new to me. An uptight British spice merchant gets involved with the shady brother of his paramour and with the Russians he has upset. On a train to Paris to meet with his more carefree brother, the Russians catch up with him. What follows is somewhat a comedy and somewhat a thriller as three parties — the brother and his former Resistance friends, the Russians, and Tommy Hambledon and the authorities — chase each other around Paris. As always these are exciting and amusing stories.
