The fifth in the State Police Trooper Ralph Lindsey series, this one again has to stretch things to get a lowly trooper involved in a murder investigation. Ralph discovers a body that soon is revealed to be someone who often picked up hitchhikers. Ralph gets involved with some small town characters, including a very pretty girl, during this investigation. Of course, coincidences abound and the villains are among the few people he meets. These are good stories with suspense and move along well, but probably shouldn’t be examined too closely.

I’d call this a country scene as thugs are waiting to jump the driver who pulls over for this redheaded hitchhiker. The artist has certainly dressed up the thugs, however, compared to the leather-jacket wearing, long sideburn-types described in the book. Why can’t we get thugs who wear suits anymore?
