I was surprised that this was written as early as 1941 as it feels much more like a post-war work. A former narcotics agent, now marrying into a rich family, is asked to suggest a private detective to help a troubled daughter of a Senator. The private detective is soon killed and our hero takes it upon himself to investigate and get revenge. This pits him against the local police and local mob, as well as putting him at odds with his fiance and her crowd. He finds some people to help him, and you know that they aren’t all they seem to be. Quite a lot of action here and some quick thinking and talking, which makes it all a fun read. Some of it is a bit far fetched, especially the ability of the mastermind to effect various players, but I’m okay with that.
