Richard S. Prather – Joker in the Deck (1964)

JokerintheDeck

Vintage Silver Age Mystery
Scavenger Hunt Category: Playing Cards
Date Finished: March 22, 2016
TBR #21

The 25th in the Shell Scott series and some forced humor as Scott investigates the murder of his friend’s brother. The friend and brother were involved in a new real estate development deal with possible expansion to an island off the coast of California. Unfortunately, some shady characters are involved in a baby food factory on one end of that island, all tied in with some suspect land deal shenanigans.  The mystery is innocuous enough, if not enthralling, but Prather’s right-wing nutso politics get paraded around at every chance. Progressive taxation! Unions! The Warren Court! The New Frontier! All conspiring against poor millionaires. Wah! Wah! A poor millionaire character has to resort to tax evasion, trying to write off his yacht as a business expense, and Shell Scott agrees with him. Progressive taxation, they claim, is just how the Communists work, not realizing that there has to be someone to pay for the Cold War, the Korean War, and the Vietnam War. How dare his factory workers want pensions and a fair wage!  It would be too much to ask for this wacko to be the murderer, of course.
