Vintage Silver Age Mystery

A stand-alone mystery by Thomas B. Dewey, more famous for his Mac and Pete Schofield series, this one is quite exciting. As I’ve seen pointed out elsewhere, even his minor characters are embodied with enough humanity to make them stand out. This is rare among writers, especially of these paperback mysteries of the 1950s and 1960s. Here a police officer goes on the trail of the murders of his wife. This trail takes him through Kansas City, Denver, and the California desert. The inner journey also takes him back from a vengeful hunter to a restored human capable of love and mercy. A very satisfying read.
