Perhaps I should have gone with “Evil Eyes” here, but if any book deserves to be the candle option, it is this one as candles are definitely involved with this murder case. The second in the Asey Mayo series, this mystery is narrated by Prue Whitsby, in her second and hopefully last outing as Asey’s assistant. In her early 50s, she comes across as an elderly spinster. Perhaps this is why this gets classified as a “cozy” mystery, a designation that I take as an insult. This is actually a classic country house mystery, as a bunch of Boston blue bloods are trapped by a snow storm in a Cape Cod vacation home. Their host shows up late and dies shortly thereafter by arsenic poisoning. Asey Mayo, now the sheriff, arrives with his folksy ways to investigate. The difficulty is that once the murder method is discovered, there isn’t a whole lot else to do, so the characters stand around talking chapter after chapter. A weak ending to a situation that starts off fairly strong.
