Vintage Golden Age Mystery

This was published in 1956 and is the second case of former Los Angeles Ram Brock Callahan. Appropriate to read it as the Rams just have received permission to move back to L.A. Some of the details seem to be off, but perhaps that is done for the story, as the new hot rookie quarterback from a well-to-do family is murdered. Will Van Brocklin come back out of retirement, though I don’t think he had retired yet? Callahan is an interesting enough character and his ambitious, though uncertain, girlfriend is, as well. The mystery is ok, though not difficult to solve, but I would have liked to see more of the NFL aspect. It is tough for us to realize its stature in a pre-Super Bowl time, but for L.A. in 1956 it was the only game in town. Even then it would seem unusual for the lack of team involvement in the murder of their quarterback, but here it is just Brock and the police.
Also, no Buick appears within this story. Another misleading cover.
