I had three copies of this, but we’ll go with the older edition, Dell 387, as that actually pictures a scene from the story. Mike is hired to investigate counterfeit tickets at a Florida dog track, but finds murder instead. Mike’s wife Phyllis is here and adds some lightheartedness to this compared to most private eye mysteries, though she doesn’t have a whole lot to do. Too bad she won’t be around for much longer in these, and too bad that Halliday couldn’t find a way to use her more effectively. The mystery here is fairly good and, being only the fourth in the series, is not yet formulaic.
