This novel is a somewhat atypical western, in that it is more the story of a father and son’s relationship over a number of years, than it is an action story. Here a father and son settle the frontier and establish a very large ranch. Almost immediately, the boy is conflicted between the father’s actions and his disregard for the law. This reoccurs many times over the years and finally comes to a head as settlers start encroaching on the ranch land. Patten is always a good writer and this is a very well-told story.
