It is easier to find a woman pictured on a cover of an older western, especially one of these Populars that reused or imitated pulp covers, where they were regularly featured, than it is to find one on a mid-1960s paperback. Gun Feud, from Popular in 1951, has been “slightly abridged for your greater reading pleasure” from a 1938 hardcover called Wandering Dogies. This cuts the book down to 128 pages, but it doesn’t read as smooth as other W.C. Tuttle works, so I’m afraid something of the style, if not the action, has been lost. There is a bit of a mystery, but it isn’t as strongly featured as many other Tuttle books, and it doesn’t feature Hashknife Hartley or any of his other recurring characters. The humor is also cut back.
