Dick Francis – Rat Race (1971)

Although I have several Dick Francis novels on hand, this is the first I’ve ever managed to read. Perhaps it is the horse racing themes that have dissuaded me in the past, or perhaps there was one old girlfriend who recommended them too highly. Commentators online describe a certain formula to Francis’ novels, but for the first one I found this one highly enjoyable, with fast moving action and strong characterizations. The hero here is a pilot for a small airline specializing in ferrying jockeys, owners, and others between race courses. There is some romance, of course, and some suspense. The mystery isn’t terribly complex, but I couldn’t put it down all afternoon.
