Richard Stark (Donald E. Westlake) – Slayground (1971)

Category: Ready by a Fellow Challenger
Date Finished: June 15, 2015

My fellow challenger at Tipping My Fedora read this back in April, and luckily this was the next Parker novel I had to read, as I move through these in order. Set almost entirely within a closed-for-the-winter amusement park, Parker has to deal with a crew of mobsters intending to take his loot away from him. By this point in the series, the Parker novels are purely action. There is very little crime planning involved, just Parker dealing with things as things go wrong. He deals very well, of course, and this novel speeds by. It does feel somewhat inconsequential, however. Parker’s toughness is demonstrated, as are the other character’s personalities through Westlake’s use of various points of view. But did we have any doubt that Parker would prevail? Not really.
