W.T. Ballard – Three for the Money (1963)

Silver Age
Category: Number in the Title
Date Finished: May 9, 2015

Another one by a pulp writer who had moved into the paperback market by the early 1960s. Unfortunately, this is the third and final mystery with Lt. Max Hunter of the Las Vegas police department. This one was really quite well done, realistically presenting police department procedures in the gambling world. Hunter gets involved with one of the three widows of the title, and has to clear his friend in the department before the scandal is revealed. It is too bad that this was not a longer series as I would have liked to read more. I’ve enjoyed Ballard’s work under his Neil MacNeil pseudonym, but need to locate more of his work.
