Brett Halliday – Dolls Are Deadly (1960)

Silver Age
Category: Involves Mode of Transportation
Date Finished: May 5, 2015

I’m going to count this one as a transportation-related mystery, as some of the plot revolves around a fishing boat picking up some mysterious cargo from a Cuban boat. This one was ghost written by Ryerson Johnson, whose westerns I’ve enjoyed. It is almost better than the ones written by Halliday himself. Of course there isn’t the character development or major changes to the setting that some of the early Hallidays allowed, but the drinking is back down to human levels and is no longer distracting. In some of the Hallidays, the mystery is how someone can walk after drinking quarts and quarts of cognac, let alone drive around and fight crime.
