Brett Halliday – The Uncomplaining Corpses (1940)

An early Mike Shayne mystery, this one is a bit weak on the mystery angle. When Mike turns down a fake break-in job, giving it to a ex-con acquaintance, things seem to snowball as the acquaintance is killed by the homeowner after supposedly murdering the homeowner’s wife. Mike gets blamed for setting it up and has to clear himself. Mike’s new wife gets involved and disappears with one of the suspects. Mike’s solution seems to be to drink four bottles of cognac (three of them by noon), four sidecars, and a bottle of port, while “investigating.” The solution to the mystery isn’t that complicated, but I did have less to drink than Mike. I think my liver hurts.
