Mary Roberts Rinehart – The Man in Lower Ten (1906)

Golden Age
Category: Method of Transportation
Finished: February 11, 2015

Mary Roberts Rinehart’s first mystery is still an effective and entertaining mystery, though strongest in its first half than in its resolution. The oddest thing is that when faced with accusation that the protagonist was involved with the murder of the man in lower ten, the train is unexpectedly destroyed by a catastrophic accident, killing everyone aboard the car except for four individuals directly involved with the mystery. This astounding event is not the main focus of the action that follows either, other than for the broken arm with which the protagonist then has to contend.
