Ben Benson – Target in Taffeta (1953)

Target in Taffeta, 1955 - illus Barye Phillips

Golden Age
Category: Professional Detective
Finished: February 15, 2015

Massachusetts State Police Inspector Wade Paris tries to break up a loan sharking racket in a mid-sized town, aided by a young, attractive, wealthy eye witness. Of course, Wade falls for her and has to resist temptation, due to the class differences. I very much enjoy these Benson novels, but this one struggles to provide much mystery or much depiction of the city corruption. It seems to me that Paris has to resist temptation in others in this series, but the class differences seem to be a weak excuse.
