Patrick Quentin – Suspicious Circumstances (1957)

Golden Age
Category: Entertainment World
Finished: January 9, 2015

The 19-year-old son of a movie star suspects his own mother after several suspicious deaths. A change of tone and style from Patrick Quentin, with more humor and less suspense than other works. The “darlings” get to be a bit much, but the ending is unexpected. By 1957 this was Wheeler writing on his own. It has been awhile since I’ve read other later works by Wheeler, but I remember more of a sense of urgency, which this once certainly does not have. I also don’t know that he quite captured the viewpoint of a 19-year-old, but that has been awhile, too.
